Support NHS services during resident doctor industrial action

Resident doctors will be taking part in national industrial action from 7am on Tuesday 7 April until 7am on Sunday 13 April 2026.

During this time, NHS services will continue to operate, but some services may be busier than usual.

People are being asked to help by using the right service for their needs. For urgent but non-life-threatening medical help, use NHS 111 online or by phone. For common conditions, Pharmacy First offers advice and treatment from local pharmacists without needing an appointment.

People may have to wait longer to be seen in A&E, where patients will be treated in order of clinical priority. A&E and 999 should only be used for life-threatening emergencies.

Patients should continue to attend planned appointments unless contacted directly and told otherwise. GP practices will continue to be open during industrial action. Walk-in centres, minor injury units and urgent treatment centres are also available for minor health concerns.

People are also encouraged to order repeat prescriptions in good time and to support friends and family to leave hospital promptly when they are ready to be discharged.

With norovirus and other seasonal illnesses continuing to circulate, people should avoid visiting healthcare settings if they are unwell unless it is essential.

By choosing the right service at the right time, the public can help ensure care is available for those who need it most.
